Meghalaya is one of the seven northeastern states of India, also known as the Seven Sisters. Meghalaya was also a part of the state of Assam until the beginning of the seventies, later it was given the status of a separate state and Shillong became its capital, but before the partition, Shillong was the joint capital of both the states, later Dispur was made the capital of Assam. Meghalaya literally means - the house of clouds. It is also the rainiest state of India, due to which its natural shade is always green. More than ninety percent of the state's area is decorated with lush green mountains, whose average height is around four to five thousand feet. This is the reason that the British must have liked this place very much, due to which they called it Scotland of the East.
