When it comes to sorting out places in India where Diwali is feted the most, no other city could perhaps match the fun and ecstasy that the capital city Delhi has to dish out to you. From electric night-life and showy cineplexes, to lush green parks and historical places, Delhi has a flavor for all ages. Besides, all these entertainment sites further get spruced up on occasions. Its really difficult for a person to choose from a multitude of entertainment choices Delhi has to offer on Diwali. However, this can be made simpler by creating a priority-list for the same.

Its always good to start your trip with some cultural heritage site. Delhi has loads of historical attractions, such as Red Fort, India Gate, Jama Masjid, Humayuns Tomb, Jantar Mantar, just to name a few. These attractions are simply at their visual best during the Diwali season. So, just prepare your list well, and explore them to have real feast for your eyes.

After having a wonderful historical ride, its recommended for you to have a visit to some religious places, like the Akshardham Temple, ISKCON Temple, Lotus Temple, and the likes. These places portray the mythological significance of Diwali and help you get closer to the highly-venerated Indian culture.

Once these religious visits are over, you can always switch to culturally opulent Delhi markets to get some rare handicrafts and Indian goodies. Delhi has a bunch of places where you can find eye-catching handiwork, garments, decorative items, along with some tasty delicacies. There is a long list of happening spots, but places like Connaught Place, South Extension, Dilli Haat, Chandni Chowk, Greater Kailash, should definitely be on your priority list. So be in Delhi at on Diwali and feel the felicity in the air with Shikhar Travels.

Polo Forest is a haven for Eco-friendly nature lovers and the adventurous. Polo-one of the most ancient historical sites in Gujarat, is also unique for its picturesque surroundings, Forest & Mills serving as refuge for fascinating flora & fauna. It is a Bird Watcher’s Delight being a sanctuary for over 200 species of Rare Birds. It also is an abode for Jungle fowl and a host of other species which are yet grimly holding on to this last habitat, thoroughly adorned by flowing rivulets and an unsullied lake. The area is surrounded with archeologically important Shiv Temple at Sarneshwar, Sadevant Savlings Deras, Surya Mandir, Lakhena Temple, Jain derasar, the ancient Polo Jain Nagri.polo-forest-vijaynagarThe Polo Camp site is located in Vijayanagar taluka of Sabarkantha districts and is near to Vanaj Forest area, Harnav River and Damsite. It is 150 km from Ahmedabad and 70 km from Himatnagar. Presently at Polo Campsite, Nature Education Camps, Wild Life training and seminars are organized.

The ancient Polo city, a gateway to Rajasthan, was once used as a hiding place for rulers, concealed from enemies, citizens, angry wives, even from the sun, tucked between sacred hills on the east and west. It was built around the river Harnav, an ancient water body spoken of in the Puranas. It is believed to have been established in the 10th century by the Parihar kings of Idar, and was then conquered in the 15th century by the Rathod Rajputs of Marwar.  The name is derived from pol, the Mapolo_vijyanaga_jaintemple_vijaynagarrwari word for “gate,” signifying its status as a gateway between Gujarat and Rajasthan. It was built between Kalaliyo in the east, the highest peak in the area, and Mamrehchi in the west, considered sacred by the local adivasis.  Together they block sunlight for most of the day, which might provide an explanation for the otherwise mysterious abandonment of the ancient city.

The 400 square km area of dry mixed deciduous forest is most lush between September and December after the monsoon rains when the rivers are full, but at any time of the year it provides a rich wildlife experience. There are more than 450 species of medicinal plants, around 275 of birds, 30 of mammals, and 32 of reptiles. There are bears, panthers, leopards, hyenas, water fowl, raptors, passerines, and flying squirrels (mostly heard, rarely seen), all living under a canopy of diverse plants and trees. During winter, all manner of migratory birds occupy the forest; during the rainy season there are wetland birds

The life of the adivasi settlements are still rooted to the forest, and they sure can teach us a lesson or two in listening to the deep hum of the world that envelops these scattered whispers of human constructions. The fig trees, when in fruit, are good places to look out for the endangered Grey Hornbill and Brown-headed Barbet who will come to nibble. Grey Hornbills can also be found at a Banyan tree near the campsite, when it is out with its bright red fruit. On another tree on the other side of the camp look for woodpeckers, and fruit birds and prey birds at the top, especially during a particular half hour in the afternoon (the exact time of which changes).

Until recently, this area was not well-known, and saw very few visitors. The numbers have increasedpolo-forest2 dramatically in the last few years, thanks to a few individuals working to promote its beauty and the following activities:

  • Trekking on jungle trails alongside the pristine lake and rivulets
  • Climbing mountains over 800 meters height.
  • Exploring 1500 year old ruins
  • Star gazing at night
  • Bird watching, morning short walk in the natural greenery
  • Herbal outings, river swimming

This increased flow comes with a price, however. It is important to remember, as visitors, to approach each destination and its inhabitants, human or otherwise, humbly, openly, and with the awareness that every interaction, no matter how slight, carries its own impact on the area whether we know it or not.

Bhabha Pass Trek
bhabha passBhaba pass Trek is an attention grabbing trek, and one of the famous trek tours among the Himachal Trekking expeditions. The pass gets carpeted by snow round the year. After crossing the Bhaba pass, the landscape changes dramatically, thick forest of Pine, cedar and deodar replaces the barren landscape of Spiti. The trail mounts along the left bank of the Wangar River after crossing a footbridge. Then keeps climbing through crop fields of Mastrang and passes through a mixed forest of conifers and temperate broad-leafed species. Travellers go trekking generally between the months of July to September as it is the most pleasant time. This journey is not only adventure centric but also spiritual because it offers a pilgrim trail to all those who are devoted to perform parikrama of the divine mountain range.

Pin Parvati
pin_parvati_passPin Parvati is a spectacular mountain pass nestled in the lap of Himalayas; it belongs to the state which means “Abode of Snow” – Himachal Pradesh. This trek is composed of lush green scenery that Parvati Valley is endowed with to the blatant and desolate land in the Pin valley in Spiti. The best season to visit this region is between July to September because it remains under heavy snow rest of the months. This trek offers a linkage between Parvati Valley in Kullu to the Pin valley in Spiti and hence the name goes Pin Parvati Pass. Manikaran dwelling between the splendid rivers namely Beas and Parvati, northeast of Bhuntar in the Kullu District is a must watch on this trial. Pine trees stands along throughout the trek. This trek being on a Buddhist region, all those traveling can make a visit to the Ki Gompo and Tabo monastery.

Sar Pass
sar-pass-imageHimachal Pradesh is gifted with natural beauty; it has diverse attractions that include adventure sports spots and scenic magnificence. Sar Pass is situated in the splendid Pin Parvati valley of Kulu District of Himachal Pradesh. In local dialect, Sar means a lake. While moving through the hilly tracks across the path from Tila Lotni to Biskeri Ridge, one has to pass by a small lake dressed in snow (Sar) and hence the name Sar Pass Trek. Over years trekkers have hit various trek routes. The path through Grahan (7,700 ft) being the first camp after Kasol, followed by Padri (8,900 ft), Ratapani (10,700 ft), Nagaru (12,500 ft), Biskeri Thatch (11,000 ft) and Bhandak Thatch (8,000 ft) was the first chosen track. After several experiments made as to which course to adopt, this track has once again become the trekker’s first choice on the way to Sar Pass.

Beas Kund
Beas-Kund_Beas-Kund_4dc8d57d-b‘Beas’ is a derivative from the name of the legendary author ‘Vyas’ who scripted the celebrated epic Mahabharata. The river Beas originates from Beas Kund, which is a remarkable destination for trekkers and tourists. The trek to Bias Kund starts from Manali, and passing through the gorgeous Solang Valley, known for its sky slopes. While on this trek, one can gather experiences of viewing lush green meadows, glaciers and snow-capped mountain peaks. Beas Kund acts as the base camp for climbing Ladakhi and friendship peak. A traveler gets an opportunity of sight seeing a lot of places on the way of this tour, namely, Delhi, Chandigarh, Manali, Solang Valley, Solang Nala, Dhundi, Bakkaer Thach, Beas Kund, Dhauladhar Mountain Range.

Chandratal Trek
chandertalChandra Taal meaning the Lake of the Moon, or Chandra Tal, is situated at an altitude of about (14,100 feet the Himalayas. This is an amazing place fitted in the midst of dry arid landscape of Spiti. The lake is bean shaped and has a circumference of about 2.8 kms. The water is crystal clear, and as the day progresses, the water changes its colour taking various shades of blue. Meadow stretched over some region at either side of the lake makes it a perfect camping location to enjoy the beautiful atmospheres of this jewel of Spiti. Since late May to early October the lake becomes reachable on foot from Batal as well as from Kunzum Pass. Most interesting fact about this lake is that there is no visible source of this lake but there is a visible outlet of this lake which means that water to this lake comes from underground.

Chanderkhani Pass
Chandrakhani-PassParvati valley that links Malana Valley to Kullu Valley carries Chandrakhani Pass. The pass is known for the beauty it possesses and is a decent base for making a trek journey.  Chandrakhani is 3600m above sea level and offers magnificent sights while on the trial. Chanderkhani Pass offers marvelous sights of the Deo Tibba peak, Pir Panjal and Parbati mountain ranges. The trek journey begins from the village of Naggar, located about 21 km from the town of Manali. Chandrakhani pass is best travelled from May to October. The sight of Pir Panjal range to the North and the smaller Shivaliks to the South so mighty from this Pass. The trek can be categorized as mild trekking.

Hampta Pass
